Dear Spencer family,
I am so sorry to hear about Michael. He was such a great artist as well as a gentle and kind person. I will never forget going to hear the band one night about a hundred years ago and hearing him sing “Tammy cooks those burgers and fries so fine, so fine”. Yes indeed, I believe I was being teased about working at the Hi-Spot. I can’t put a burger on the BBQ without smiling and thinking of Michael singing- my song! I am sure there are hundreds of stories like mine where Michael left a bit of him in each of our hearts. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.
Sincerely,
Tammy H. Morgan

I met Mike Spencer through Mike Berrett (my brother) who was the drummer for Thunderbuck Ram... I'm Mike B's little brother. I remember Michael Spencer playing and singing in TBR since I was 5 years old - in our garage, in our backyard, and all over. That's 42 years of happy times and great music. I looked forward to seeing them play every year when I could be there. What a man, mind and musician. Thank you Michael for being who you are and sharing yourself with all of us through your brilliant music! Evan Berrett

My first memory of Mike, other than when he and my sister Susan got married, was when I was like 14 yrs old. My parents and I went to Utah to visit Mike and Susan and to meet Scott for the first time after he was born. It was the first time I had a conversation with Mike. He asked me what kind of music I liked and I learned that he was in a band called Thunderbuck Ram. It was also the first time I learned about rock and roll..!! Momma and Daddy had gotten me a walkman for the trip but I think I only had like one cassette and it was probably Kenny Rogers or something. Mike was so nice… he gave me one of his cassette tapes and said I could have it and it was Cheap Trick..!! I listened to it for like three days straight, all the way home to Louisiana..!!

A couple of years later, I got to go stay with Mike and Susan for a few days. Scott had grown so much and Jeff was just a baby still. Mike and Susan, took me to a Journey/Bryan Adams concert and I thought that was soooo cool..!! What I remember most though, is seeing what a great family my sister had and I could see that Mike loved my sister and his kids very much.

Mike never seemed to judge and was always so kind me. Although the opportunity to see or talk to him was few and far between, my husband and I love Mike very much and I have always been so proud and happy that he is my brother –in- law. I am so thankful that my sister, niece and nephews have such a loving and caring man as Mike, as husband and father.

Beautiful Sue,
My heart is breaking for you and your family. Mike is such a wonderful man. I was just looking back thru Bodeys baby book the other day and there was a picture of you and Mike holding him the day he was born. He is ten now, where do the yrs go? I just wanted to let you know it was my privilege and honor to know and have such a wonderful, kind hearted man part of mine and my children’s lives. Sue, I know your faith in the Lord will help you and your children bare the burden of this heartache, but please know I am here for you. I have so so so many fond wonderful memories of the two of you. I still stand strong behind my words “Firehawk was at their best with Mike.” I loved listening to him sing. He had a hypnotizing voice that just touched your soul. I will miss Mike immensely. He was such a talented man, not only musically but professionally. I know how much he loved his family and above all else you were his life. I have several pictures of the two of you thru the years together. I would love to share them with you when you have a moment. As for now I want you to know you are in my prayers and my thoughts. I am sending you a hug from afar. I love you Sue and will see you soon.

I remember great times making music with Herr Hilgendorff in the Dixon Jr. High Orchestra--especially those two or three months we spent in the practice room--Mike on viola, Chris on cello, and Tom Bettweiser and me on violins. Great fun, good music.

RIP, Mike.

Charley and I met Mike at Christmas time when we went to visit our daughters, Susan and Linda, who were attending school in Utah. Susan was anxious for us to meet Mike who she had been dating for a few weeks. At this time, Mike played and sang a Beatles song, “Blackbird”, on his acoustic guitar. Charley was very impressed and they shared their love of music and especially Mike’s “Beatles” and Charley’s “Kingston Trio” ever since. We were very happy when they were married in the Manti temple the following April and Mike became a part of our family.

We learned to love and to appreciate him as our son. We appreciated how he worked for days in the “Dallas Years” laying on the freezing cold garage floor patching a hole in the engine housing and rebuilding the engine on their car. And this, using his musician hands needed to play his guitars. We will miss him and are grateful to him for loving and taking care of our daughter and their children. We appreciate him driving 3200 miles twice to visit us after he was diagnosed with cancer. The last time I talked to him on the phone I told him we loved him and he said, “I love you, too.”

I'm always going to have the memory of walking into the Spencer's place and hearing music come from the upstairs. I didn't talk with him much, but seeing his passion for his music definitely made an impact on me. To be honest, I had no idea he was having health issues until I saw that he had passed away. Something like this really forces you to think about your priorities and life in general (and death of course). This is one of my favorite families. I know that that's due in great part to Michael.

Mike was my brother and playmate from our earliest years. We were only two years apart. We shared lots of laughter, fights, love, and play. He was always a lot of fun but also intense in his feelings. He loved little children even as a teenager. He baptized and ordained my son a deacon. I always admired his artistic and musical gifts and his kindness and loving ways. I will always remember the two warm, strong hugs I got from him the last time I saw him. I can't wait to see him again when I reach the other side. I know he is waiting for his family and enjoying the peace and comfort his Savior and Heavenly Father are giving him. Mike, I love you so much!
